The Pump House

The Pump House is a plein‑air watercolour painted at the very centre of Christleton, Cheshire. This small historic structure stands at a crossroads, its timbered roof sheltering the old village pump. I set up my easel on a calm day to capture the soft light falling across the stonework and the gentle curve of the road that leads down towards the duck pond.

The signpost, pointing right towards Birch Heath, adds a lovely sense of direction and quiet movement within the scene. As people passed by and the light shifted through the trees, I worked quickly to hold onto the atmosphere — the muted tones, the leafy edges of the village, and the timeless character of this familiar meeting point. Painting on location gave the piece its fresh, immediate feel and a true sense of Christleton’s charm.
