Where the Oak Stood First
Painted en plein air along a bridlepath in the Brecon Beacons, this piece captures the towering presence of ancient Oak and Ash trees. Dwarfed beneath them, a fingerpost hints at the path’s long history. Wind stirs the long grass and sings through the canopy, while moss-clad limbs catch the light in soft pinks and greens. Using the textured surface of Arches paper, I preserved highlights with a light touch to suggest the rugged beauty of weathered bark. This painting is an homage to quiet endurance—to the first tree that claimed this place and holds it still.
